What is DNS (Domain Name Server?
Domain Name Service, or DNS, is a service that provides a means of accessing IP addresses via the WWW and a Browser program using common domain names.
Each country has a central Network Information Center (NIC) that registers the domain names within that country. The NIC for the United States is called InterNIC.
Each domain name is pointed to a pair of name servers, a primary and a secondary. Whenever a domain name is typed into a Web browser, the DNS computer of the browser's ISP (Internet Service Provider) searches its cache for the IP address that is associated with that domain name. If there is no such entry cached in the ISP's memory, a lookup query is sent to the NIC's root servers. The NIC's root servers then return the DNS location associated with the domain name back to the ISP so that the ISP's computer can access the Web site.
